Pompeii is 28 km from Sorrento, about 40 to 50 minutes by road, and the Vesuvius car park is a further drive up the mountain. Put the two together and you have a full day, which is why most visitors book a tour that handles the driving, the tickets and the timing.
Below: what happens hour by hour, how much of Pompeii you really see, how hard the volcano part is, and how to choose between the tours that leave Sorrento every morning.
The quick answer
Yes, you can do both in one day: tours from Sorrento take 6 to 8.5 hours, with about 2 hours guided inside Pompeii and a steep 30 to 40 minute walk from the Vesuvius car park to the crater rim. Both tickets are included on every tour listed here; lunch usually is not. The Gray Line full-day tour is the most booked option.

Can you do Pompeii and Vesuvius in one day from Sorrento?
Yes. A guided day trip covers both in 6 to 8.5 hours, and doing it on your own by train and bus is possible but tight.
Tours pick up in Sorrento, drive to Pompeii for the morning, then climb by road to about 1,000 metres on Vesuvius for the walk to the rim. On your own you need the Circumvesuviana train, a separate bus up the volcano and a timed crater ticket, all lined up. See Sorrento to Pompeii by train for the DIY version.
One booking covers the minibus, the guide and both tickets, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Check dates for the full-day guided tourHow does the day work, hour by hour?
Morning in Pompeii, lunch, the drive up Vesuvius in the early afternoon, and back in Sorrento about 8 hours after you left.
- Meet in Sorrento: Gray Line meets at its office on Piazza Tasso; arrive 15 minutes early. Some small-group tours collect you from your hotel instead.
- Drive to Pompeii: 40 to 50 minutes along the coast road.
- Pompeii: about 2 hours with a guide, then roughly an hour of free time for lunch.
- Vesuvius: the vehicle climbs to the car park at about 1,000 metres, then you walk 30 to 40 minutes up to the rim, look around and walk back down.
- Back to Sorrento: late afternoon, at the same meeting point.

How much of Pompeii do you actually see?
About 2 hours with a guide: enough for the classic loop, not for the whole 66-hectare site.
The Gray Line route covers the Forum, the Macellum market, the Stabian Baths, the Temple of Jupiter, the House of the Faun, the Basilica and the Teatro Grande, and passes the Lupanar. It does not reach the Amphitheatre at the far end or the Villa of the Mysteries, and guests who loved Pompeii often say they wanted more time. The coach tour gives about 3 hours; the Pompeii-only tour gives about 2.5 hours and has you back in Sorrento after lunch.

More interested in the Roman city than the volcano? The Pompeii-only tour spends about 2.5 hours inside with an official guide.
Explore the Pompeii-only tourWhat is the Vesuvius part really like?
A steep 30 to 40 minute walk on loose gravel from the car park to the rim, not a drive to the top.
Vehicles stop at about 1,000 metres and the path climbs to around 1,170 metres. The park rates it a low-difficulty trail, but reviewers describe "2 km mainly uphill" and about 35 minutes to the top if you are not used to hiking. It is windy and cooler at the rim. Everything you need to know is in the Vesuvius crater hike guide.

Should you see Pompeii or Vesuvius first?
Most tours do Pompeii in the morning and Vesuvius after lunch; the small-group pizza tour does it the other way round.
Pompeii first means you walk the ruins before the midday heat, when there is little shade. Vesuvius first, as on the HP Travel tour, puts you on the rim in the morning with an alpine guide, then lunch, then Pompeii in the afternoon. Neither order is wrong: pick the tour for its group size and inclusions, not the running order.
Want lunch sorted? The small-group pizza tour includes a pizza and soft drink between the two sites.
Check dates for the small-group tour with pizzaIs lunch included?
Usually not. Most tours give you about an hour of free time; the HP Travel pizza tour is the exception.
On the Gray Line tour you can pay for an optional set lunch of about €18 (pizza, a soft drink and an ice cream), and guests' opinions on it are mixed. The Enjoy Pompeii, Goldentours and Askos tours leave lunch at your own expense too. Bring water and a snack either way; it is a long day on your feet.

Which tour should you book?
The Gray Line full-day tour for value and reviews, a small group if crowds bother you, a private tour if you want your own pace.
- Most booked: Gray Line full-day tour, $133, 4.7 from 1,573 reviews, up to 30 travellers.
- Lunch included: small-group tour with pizza, $133, up to 25.
- Smallest group: hotel-pickup small group, $195, 12 at most.
- Most time in Pompeii: coach tour, $143, about 3 hours inside but up to 45 people.
- Your own guide: private tour, $611 per group.
Is the Pompeii and Vesuvius day trip worth it?
Yes for most first-time visitors: it is the easiest way to see both in a day. Just go in knowing the trade-offs.
Expect a big group on the budget tours (guests report 33 to 35 people in Pompeii, and headsets that cut out), a quick 2-hour loop of Pompeii, and a real climb on the volcano. The crater path closes on orange weather alerts, and on the first Sunday of the month Pompeii is free for everyone, so there is no skip-the-line. Doing it yourself is cheaper; see the tour price and DIY cost.

What happens if Vesuvius is closed on the day?
The crater path shuts on an orange weather alert or during wildfires. Gray Line offers a skip-the-line visit to Herculaneum instead when it knows in advance, and Buyourtour refunds part of the price.
Can cruise passengers do this tour?
Not the Gray Line group tour: it starts and ends in Sorrento and the listing says it is not suitable for cruise passengers.
Is the day trip suitable for children?
For school-age children who can walk, yes. Under-18s enter Pompeii free and under-6s go up Vesuvius free, but strollers are hard work on the paving and the gravel path.
Can I go on the first Sunday of the month?
You can, and Pompeii is free that day, but it is crowded and skip-the-line entry does not apply, so pick another day if you can.
