Pompeii or Herculaneum?

Vesuvius buried two Roman towns in AD 79. Pompeii is the famous one; Herculaneum is smaller and in places better preserved. Here is how to choose from Sorrento, or how to see both.

Both towns are UNESCO-listed and both are on the same train line from Sorrento. They make very different visits: Pompeii is a whole city you cannot see in a day, Herculaneum a compact neighbourhood you can walk in a morning.

If you are weighing up Herculaneum against the Vesuvius crater, there is a tour that does Pompeii and Herculaneum together, with no climbing.

The quick answer

Choose Pompeii for scale and the famous sights, Herculaneum for preservation and a shorter, easier visit. Pompeii is closer to Sorrento and costs €20; Herculaneum costs €16. Short on time or not keen on the crater climb? The Askos small-group tour covers both towns in about 8 hours.

How do Pompeii and Herculaneum compare?

Pompeii is bigger and more famous; Herculaneum is smaller, quieter to walk and in places better preserved.

Which is better preserved?

Herculaneum, in detail: upper storeys, wooden beams and doors survive there that are long gone in Pompeii.

Herculaneum was buried much deeper, and that sealed it more completely. Pompeii wins on the big picture: temples, a forum, theatres and whole streets that let you picture a working city. Both have remarkable wall paintings.

Which is easier to see in a short visit?

Herculaneum: it is compact enough to cover properly in a few hours, while a 2-hour tour of Pompeii only scratches the surface.

Pompeii's standard guided loop takes in the Forum, the baths, the House of the Faun and the theatres, and leaves out the Amphitheatre and the Villa of the Mysteries. Both sites involve uneven ground and steps, and neither is easy with a wheelchair or stroller.

How do you get to each from Sorrento?

Both are on the Circumvesuviana: Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri for Pompeii, Ercolano Scavi further on for Herculaneum.

Pompeii is about 30 minutes from Sorrento; Herculaneum takes longer, since it is closer to Naples. From Ercolano Scavi you walk down through the modern town to the entrance. Full details in Sorrento to Pompeii by train.

Can you see both in one day?

Yes: the Askos small-group tour does Pompeii in the morning and Herculaneum after lunch, in about 8 hours.

An archaeologist-guide leads both visits, including the frescoes of the Insula dei Casti Amanti in Pompeii. Lunch is at your own expense, and one guest counted about 13,000 steps. The listing caps the group at 19, but some reviewers report 21 to 23 people, and one missed seeing the plaster casts. The listing mentions both an included Herculaneum ticket and a €16 adult fee, so check your voucher. Rated 4.5 from 83 reviews.

Pompeii and Herculaneum, or Pompeii and Vesuvius?

Herculaneum if you love history or would rather not climb; Vesuvius if you want the view and the crater.

The crater is a steep 30 to 40 minute walk on gravel and closes on orange weather alerts, while Herculaneum is at sea level with no climb at all. See the crater hike guide to judge whether the climb suits you.

Wall paintings reward the Herculaneum option.

What if Vesuvius is closed on your tour day?

Gray Line swaps the crater for a skip-the-line visit to Herculaneum when it knows the gate will be closed.

That makes Herculaneum the natural backup: the Vesuvius path closes on orange (or higher) Civil Protection alerts and during wildfires, as it did in August 2025.

Still want the volcano? The full-day tour has a Herculaneum backup if the crater gate is closed.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Herculaneum ticket?

The full ticket is €16, per the Italian Ministry of Culture listing for the Parco Archeologico di Ercolano.

Is Herculaneum worth it if I have seen Pompeii?

Yes. It is a very different visit: smaller, with upper floors and woodwork that do not survive in Pompeii.

Can you do Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius in one day?

Not sensibly. Pick two: Pompeii with either Herculaneum or the crater.

Which is closer to Sorrento?

Pompeii. Herculaneum is further along the Circumvesuviana towards Naples.
